Growing up with Disability

Andrew Kwok

Abstract

This is a brief auto-bibliographical account of a person with cerebral palsy. Andrew recalled his early education in a special school in Hong Kong; how he was brought up to see himself as a disabled but normal person, and how he successfully tackled his later challenges in the mainstream education system and in later years. While he stresses the importance of striving for a positive life goal on the part of a disabled person, he also focuses on the physical environment and attitudinal issues as these are the fundamental factors that cause unnecessary barriers to people with physical disabilities.
